The spread here is narrower at the top than in most of our tests and much wider at the bottom, which is the Italian pattern: a competent product gets you to roughly 90 words a minute and then leaves you there.

Read the second and third columns as two different products. Several apps here are excellent at one and useless at the other, and the reviews that rank them in a single list are averaging two unrelated things.
Diagnose your own plateau in two minutes
Two minutes, a phone, and no preparation. This is a better diagnosis than any placement test, because placement tests reward recognition and the plateau is a production problem.
Pick a topic you have never rehearsed in Italian. Not your job, not your family, not your holiday. Something like why a film you saw was badly made.
Talk for two minutes without stopping. Record it. Stopping to find a word is allowed; stopping to plan the sentence is the thing you are measuring.
Count the words and divide by two. Under 80 words a minute means retrieval is your binding constraint, whatever your grammar knowledge says. Native conversational Italian runs 140 to 180.
Now count three things in the transcript. Subjunctives, instances of ci or ne, and sentences with more than one clause. If all three are at or near zero while your accuracy is high, you are not intermediate — you are avoiding, fluently.
Four drills that actually move it
Four drills that attack the plateau specifically, in the order we would run them.
Forced subordination. Say everything twice: once as two short sentences, once as one long one. The second version is the one that has to come out unprompted eventually, and it will not until you have built it deliberately a few hundred times.
Particle substitution. Take any sentence you produced and rewrite it replacing the repeated noun phrase with ci or ne. This is mechanical, dull, and the single fastest way to stop sounding translated.
Opinion prompts, for the subjunctive. Anything beginning penso che, credo che, mi sembra che forces the structure you have been dodging. Twenty a day for two weeks moves it from known to available.
Rate pressure. Set a timer and require a fixed word count. Accuracy will drop and should be allowed to. Retrieval speed only improves under conditions where accuracy is not the binding constraint.
Where all of these still fall short
Honest limits, including ours.
Regional Italian is essentially unmodelled. A great deal of everyday Italian is regionally coloured, and the whole category trains a standard broadcast register that few people speak at home.
Words per minute is a proxy, not the goal. A learner can raise rate by padding with fillers. We counted content words, but the measure is still gameable and you should treat a 15-word difference as noise.
Twelve weeks is a short window for a plateau. Plateaus are measured in years for most people. What our cohort figures show is direction, not a promise of arrival.
None of these teach you to read literary Italian. If that is your goal, the passato remoto and a book will serve you better than any app in this comparison.
